女性犧牲在舊片銀幕很尋常，但男性的卻很罕有。明治大阪商戶，漂亮的么女兒春琴自小失明，醉心音樂終成名師。她對男人冷傲，只有忠僕佐助例外，但兩人關係神秘而瘋狂。春琴授佐助三味線，嚴苛得近乎虐待，佐助最後自虐，成全與春琴廝守。谷崎潤一郎的名作首度搬上銀幕，後來者達五個版本，北野武的《偶斷絲連》也向這段狂戀致敬。島津高明的是運用琴音，與場景交織出緊緻的人物關係。田中絹代演繹盲女直如創作，內儉克制極其出色。
